A screen made from the membrane of a soap bubble has become the world's thinnest display, researchers have said.
The team including scientists at the University of Tokyo, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Tsukuba say they made the "colloidal" display using a soap-like membrane which is both very thin and difficult to break.
A mixture of liquids are used in the display, but soap is the main ingredient.
The screen is capable of displaying 3D images as well as standard 2D projections.
The image is created on the screen with ultrasonic vibrations.
Yoichi Ochiai from the University of Tokyo, said:
"The combination of the ultrasonic waves and ultra thin membranes makes more realistic, distinctive, and vivid imageries on screen. This system contributes to open up a new path for display engineering with sharp imageries, transparency, BRDF and flexibility."
