Russell Brand Left Squirming After Katy Perry Lyrics Read Out On Air

'Wish I Knew Then, What I Know Now'

Russell Brand was left squirming after the lyrics to Katy Perry's break-up anthem Wide Awake were read aloud to him during a radio interview on Wednesday.

Russell's on-air chat with Howard Stern turned audibly awkward as the DJ forced him to listen to a few choice lines, including, "I wish I knew then/ What I know now/ Wouldn't dive in/ Wouldn't bow down."

The yoga-loving comic tried to dodge questions about the heartbreak ballad by claiming he had never heard it, but put the host in his place when Howard tried to suggest Katy's pop music might have irritated Russell's rocker side.

Russell insisted: "She's a good person, I've got nothing but love for her. I was very proud of everything she did. She's a young woman dealing with the break up of a relationship... which is understandable. It's a nice song."

But his display of chivalry didn't last long - Russell then confessed to enjoying his newly single life with a rather unsavoury Willy Wonka metaphor.

He joked: "If you've been on a diet of rice for a while and suddenly Willy Wonka asked you to take over the factory, you'd be kicking over barrels of candy and swimming in a chocolate river."
