Filippo Inzaghi, the prolific former Juventus and AC Milan striker, has announced his retirement after an illustrious career.
After an 11-year association with the Rossoneri he will now become a coach of the club's youth team.
A two-time Champions League winner and member of the Italy squad which won the 2006 World Cup, who also won three Scudetti, Super Pippo is living proof that appearances can be deceiving.
For Inzaghi left linesmen with strained muscles in their arms. "Born offside," was how Sir Alex Ferguson once described him, so often was he ahead of the play. Invariably Inzaghi would tuck away the chance and then, stopped in mid-celebration, beg for kindness and feign innocence.
Johan Cruyff asserted he "can't actually play football at all" while fellow Dutchman Jaap Stam labelled him a "diving cheat". But his knack for straying ahead of the penultimate opponent, or his gamesmanship, should not overlook an extraordinary career in front of goal. The 38-year-old scored 156 Serie A goals in 370 games and 25 in 57 for the Azzurri.
He ended a glittering association with football by scoring the winner in his final ever match against Novara for Milan in May.
