Jessica Ennis: 'I Can't Believe It Happened'

Jessica Ennis has described how winning the gold medal in the heptathlon in London 2012 has left her in a state of shock.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast the 26-year-old from Sheffield said: “I can’t believe it happened."

“I’m just so excited I’m tired because I’ve had a couple of hours sleep," she added.

Ennis took home the gold medal after roaring over the finish line in the 800m in two minutes 8.65 seconds, setting a new British record.

Describing the 80,000 crowd who cheered her on, she said: “it’s like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. I do enjoy competing in front of a big crowd and having that support behind me. It was unbelievable in there. It gave me goose bumps and it made me want to raise my game even more.”

“It was so much pressure. I’m so relieved I’ve got the medal now,” she added. “I’m going to spend some time with my family. Have a break and relax. It’s been up and down and stressful.”

Asked if she would take part in the individual hurdles, Ennis said she had thought about it but was more than happy with her heptathlon gold.

Also in the studio was former US Olympic runner Michael Johnson described Ennis' performance as "incredible".

Speaking of the combined added pressure of performing at your home Games and being the face of the Olympics he said: "Olympic competition just by itself for anyone, is difficult. You’ve got to get it right on the day. So Jess coming in and being able to deliver and having a personal best performance was incredible.”

Long jump champion Greg Rutherford was also on the BBC sofa.

He described that he felt very confident as the other competitors "just didn't have the spark that I'd noticed in some of the other competitions".
