Multi-Award Winning Composer Marvin Hamlisch Dies

Acclaimed composer Marvin Hamlisch has passed away. He was 68 years old.

Hamlisch collapsed after a brief illness and died in New York on Tuesday.

He boasted the rare honour of being one of only two people ever awarded an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, a Tony and a Pulitzer Prize - the other being late composer Richard Rodgers.

Hamlisch worked on the scores for more than 40 films and is best remembered for his work on Barbra Streisand's 1973 movie The Way We Were, which won him two Academy Awards, and creating the music for 1973's The Sting, which also won him an Oscar.

Hamlisch enjoyed close collaborations with a number of Hollywood legends during his career, including Woody Allen, Steven Soderbergh and Streisand.

He also left his mark on the world of theatre with his award-winning work on hit musical A Chorus Line, The Goodbye Girl and They're Playing Our Song.

Hamlisch went on to become the principal conductor for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Pasadena Symphony and Pops, Seattle Symphony, and San Diego Symphony.

He is survived by his wife, Terre.
