Shay Given has announced his retirement from representing the Republic of Ireland international team after 125 caps.
The Aston Villa goalkeeper debuted for his country 16 years ago and played in their 2002 World Cup campaign in Japan and South Korea.
Given was also between the sticks during Ireland's disastrous European Championship campaign this summer as he endured one of the worst individual performances of the tournament.
"This has been an extremely difficult decision for me to make. I have dedicated 16 years of my life to my country, and I have a great affinity with Giovanni Trapattoni’s squad. I’d like to thank the Giovanni, Marco and Alan Kelly for their support during my time with the team. I will continue to be Ireland’s biggest fan, and wish the lads well as they embark upon their new campaign.’

Given did however add that should there be a goalkeeping emergency, he would happily return to assist his country again.
Giovanni Trapattoni praised how Given's "love of playing for his country always shone through" and it had been "a pleasure to work with him".
