Manchester United have announced the signing of striker Robin van Persie from Arsenal.

The Dutchman passed a medical and has signed a deal until June 2016 with the 19-times English champions for a fee believed to be £24m.

Van Persie told the club's official website "it is an honour" to sign for the Red Devils.

"I am looking forward to following in the footsteps of so many great strikers, bringing my experience and playing my part to help the team compete for the biggest trophies in the game. I can’t wait to get started.”

Sir Alex Ferguson hailed the 29-year-old as a "world-class striker with a proven record in England and in European football".

"His talents need no introduction to our fans – he has scored a number of goals against us in some classic battles with his former club. His movement, finishing and all-round ability are outstanding.”

Ferguson confirmed Van Persie would be the United's last summer signing unless one certain player became available.

Van Persie follows in the footsteps of some illustrious compatriots to have played at Old Trafford.

Arnold Muhren, Jaap Stam, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Edwin van der Sar in particular all enjoyed a tremendous rapport with United fans, with some of their chants still sung on the terraces.

Van Persie is the first Arsenal player United have signed since Viv Anderson - Ferguson's first ever buy at the club - in 1987.

Ferguson and Van Persie will hold court at a 2pm press conference later on Friday afternoon, but the PFA and FWA Player of the Year is in line to make his debut for United against Everton on Monday night.
