As you're doubtless already aware, last Friday was Indonesian Independence Day.

And for many in Jakarta, this meant celebrating in the traditional manner - with a good, old-fashioned game of Panjit Pinang.

Just in case you're not already familiar with the game, it involves shinning up greased-up poles in order to retrieve various prizes from the top.

As you can see from the amazing slideshow below, there were plenty of excellent goods up for offer - including some pretty nifty-looking bicycles. No wonder kids and grown-ups alike were climbing over one another to get to the top.

Mind you, getting down again presented its own problems. Turns out it's quite difficult to ride a bike down a slippery pole...
