A student who is facing charges of attempting to murder two men with a machete is allowed to remove his electronic tag when he goes to university as it is "embarrassing".
Connor Maskey from Belfast was granted the request on Tuesday after petitioning the High Court to change his bail conditions. Lord Justice Coghlin ruled the defendant could remove the tag but said police must accept responsibility for any subsequent consequences, according to the Belfast Telegraph.
Maskey is charged with two counts of attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon. The attack happened last November, when a father and son were seriously hurt. The younger victim suffered a back wound and a severed tendon when his elbow was cut to the bone, the BBC reported at the time.
20-year-old Maskey said wearing the electronic tag to university was embarrassing.
Prosecution counsel Conor Maguire said the police accepted removing the device would help the defendant at university.
Lord Justice Coghlin said: ”If police are satisfied they can cope with the risk of him breaching his night time curfew without a tag... that is a high responsibility should anything occur as a consequence of police agreeing to remove the tag.
"I will remove the tag on that basis — that police take full responsibility for the removal."
