Manchester City Sign Veteran Goalkeeper Richard Wright

City Sign Richard Wright, Remember Him?

Manchester City have signed veteran goalkeeper Richard Wright, who was recently on trial with League One team Colchester United.

Wright, 34, left Preston North End in the summer, citing "homesickness", yet has returned to the north-west with the Premier League champions.

His arrival at Eastlands was captured by a photographer during the club's squad pictures for the current season.

Former Ipswich Town goalkeeper Wright earned his first England cap as a 22-year-old in a 2-1 win over Malta in the build up to Euro 2000 12 years ago, when he conceded and saved a penalty kick.

In 2001 he signed for Arsenal for £6m from the Tractor Boys, viewed as a long-term replacement for the ageing David Seaman.

However Wright struggled at Highbury and was sold the following year to Everton, where he enjoyed a fruitful debut season making 37 appearances.

But Nigel Martyn's arrival in 2003 saw Wright relegated to second-choice goalkeeper, and he has since become a journeyman playing for Southampton, West Ham United and Sheffield United as well as returning to Town.
