James Murphy Says Goodbye To LCD Soundsystem... On Film

James Murphy is an unusual rock frontman, not least making the decision to disband his extremely successful group LCD Soundsystem at the height of its performing powers.

James Murphy put his farewell to LCD Soundsystem on film

This meant that, on 2 April 2011, Madison Square Garden played host to Murphy and his crew for what would be their farewell performance to an arena full of broken-hearted but still devoted fans.

What was going through Murphy's mind at this strange hour? Well, the good news is we get to find out, because the mercurial performer had agreed to film a documentary, an intimate portrait charting the lead-up to the final show, the witching hour itself, the day after and the personal and professional consequences afterwards.

The film is out today, debuting with a special premiere event at the Hackney Picturehouse in London, where broadcaster Edith Bowman will be sitting down with Murphy and asking him exactly what gives (with the interview being streamed across Picturehouse Cinemas throughout the UK).

He's an eloquent but slippery subject, so don't expect him to give too much away, although, in our Exclusive Clip above, he talks about his "heroes". Meanwhile, the film is in cinemas for one night only (a la Iron Sky with their bemusing distribution strategy), but has already been rebooked in various places throughout September. You can see all places and dates here...

Shut Up and Play the Hits in cinemas from 4 September, DVD and exclusive items on preorder at www.shutupandplaythehits.com, and in the meantime, here's the trailer...
