When Bradley Wiggins became the first Briton to win the Tour de France, all money was on him to win sports personality of the year.
Less than two weeks later, when he added a gold medal to his haul, all bets were off.
Then came Super Saturday, where Team GB won six medals - three within an hour of each other. Then Sarah Storey, and the rousing achievements of Paralympics GB. Finally, Andy Murray won a Grand Slam (oh, and he also won a gold and silver medal for Team GB too).
