Benedict Cumberbatch, nominated for Sherlock: Scandal in Belgravia (along with fellow Brits Clive Owen - Hemingway and Gelhorn - and Idris Elba - Luther) lost out to Kevin Costner for his sterling performance in Hatfields & McCoys.
Julianne Moore - "vindicated"
Martin Freeman, soon to appear in The Hobbit on the big screen, also fell foul of the same rivals, with Hatfields' Tom Berenger winning in his category for Best Supporting Actor.
Collecting her gong for Game Change, Julianne Moore told the audience, "I feel so validated, because Sarah Palin gave me a big thumb's down."
