Ryder Cup captain José María Olazábal fought back tears as both the United States and Europe remembered the late Seve Ballesteros.

Ballesteros died last year after a long battle and treatment for a brain tumour, having memorably captained Europe to their 1997 Ryder Cup success at Valderrama.

Olazábal, who played under his compatriot 15 years ago, had to compose himself as he paid tribute to one of his greatest friends within the game.

"Of course I can't forget a great friend in the name of Seve Ballesteros," he said. "He was a special man. I believe Seve reflected the core of Ryder Cup values - no quitting and be prepared to chase any adversity.

"From him I learnt what true passion is all about. Seve, we miss you," he added.
