Mitchel Graham Jailed For 15 Months For Running Over 'Robocop' Diederik Coetzee

15 Months For Man Who Ran Over 'RoboCop'

A man was jailed for 15 months on Friday for running over a celebrated police officer and leaving him to die in the middle of a road.

Mitchel Graham, 26, was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court after admitting dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and failing to report an accident after hitting Pc Diederik Coetzee, from Nottinghamshire Police.

Coetzee, who joined the force in 2001, earned the nickname RoboCop for his work policing the notorious Ladywood Estate.

Sentencing Graham, Judge Jonathan Teare said: "It may seem ridiculously short for all those that grieve the loss of a husband and father but it's all I can do."

Pc Diederik Coetzee, from Nottinghamshire Police, was hit by a car driven by Mitchel Graham, 26, as he cycled along Blidworth Lane in Nottingham last November.

The 55-year-old, who joined the force in June 2001, was off duty when the accident happened and required lengthy hospital treatment for head injuries.

Nearly 10 months since the crash, Pc Coetzee still receives intensive rehabilitation treatment and is making slow but steady progress.
