What Makes Jahmene Douglas' Past So Troubled?

The father of 'The X Facto' sensation Jahmene Douglas is a convicted rapist who has been jailed for attacking the singer's mother, according to reports.

Eustace Douglas was sentenced to nine years in jail for causing grievous bodily harm after attacking Douglas mother Mandy Thomas.

The singer will now use his fame to campaign against domestic violence, reports The Sun newspaper.

The singer's father served a nine-year jail sentence

The assault took place at the family’s home in Bath, Somerset, when Jahmene was just 11.

Eustace also admitted raping a woman and was given a concurrent sentence of six years imprisonment.

The couple had been together for 18 years but have been out of touch ever since.

A friend of the singer tells the newspaper: "His dad was a nasty piece of work and terrorised the family. It’s no wonder Jahmene is shy and has had confidence issues."

Deeply religious Jahmene told the paper: "Our struggles are what make us stronger and I hope I can become an inspiration to those still suffering. I’m still here and happy. Don’t let anyone take your happiness. Only you know what’s best for you and your family but speak out and reach out."

The singer is a favourite to win the show and has won applause for his version of 'Imagine' from Yoko Ono.
