Senegal have been dumped from the 2013 African Cup of Nations after their fans rioted during a qualifying match against Ivory Coast.
The Confederation of African Football disqualified the west African country, saying that "missiles, stones, bottles [and] firecrackers" had been thrown onto the pitch and tear gas was also used by rioters. Ivory Coast were awarded a 2-0 victory after the match was abandoned.
The chaos is believed to have started as Senegalese fans realised their team looked likely to miss out on January's finals after former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba scored his and Ivory Coast's second goal from the penalty spot in the 70th minute. That gave Ivory Coast a 6-2 aggregate score
As scenes inside the stadium turned violent one fan even charged the pitch in at attempt to confront Drogba but was stopped.

Ivory Coast fans then had to retreat onto the pitch before they were led to safety by the police.
Despite the seriousness of the scenario, Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew will be delighted at Senegal's exclusion. His strikeforce pairing of Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse would have missed a month's worth of Premiership action but will now be available to play for the Magpies in the new year.
