George Michael Pulled Out Of Attitude Awards

He only just returned to the stage for the first time since cheating death in his 2011 pneumonia battle, but George Michael is clearly determined not to overexert himself again - he pulled out of a prizegiving on Tuesday after feeling unwell.

The Careless Whisper singer was partway through a European tour last November when he fell ill with severe pneumonia in Vienna, Austria and he spent a month in intensive care at the city's General Hospital.

He headed back to Vienna in September to play a special gig for the doctors and nurses who looked after him, and subsequently resumed his live dates.

And it seems George is putting his health above everything else - instead of accepting his Icon honour at the Attitude Magazine Awards in London on Tuesday, he was recuperating at home after coming down with a cold.

A source told The Mirror: "George had his car booked and was all ready to go. Unfortunately, he started feeling weak and cold-y on the morning and this got worse as the day progressed.

"He was really sad to pull out but he knew he had a gig coming up and couldn’t disappoint thousands of fans. After having a sore throat and losing his voice over the weekend, he decided to rest to make sure it didn’t go again."

Attitude editor Matthew Todd added: "George must put his health first."

George's illness comes just two weeks after he announced he was cancelling a series of shows in Australia to focus on his health and seek treatment for "anxiety" issues.

He told fans: "By way of explanation all I can say at this time is that since last year's illness I have tried in vain to work my way through the trauma that the doctors who saved my life warned me I would experience.

"They recommended complete rest and the type of post traumatic counselling which is available in cases like mine but I'm afraid I believed (wrongly) that making music and getting out there to perform for the audiences that bring me such joy would be therapy enough in itself."
