Youth Unemployment Scheme Will Pay EU Youths To Get Jobs In Britain

Should Unemployed European Youths Be Paid To Work In UK?

A European Commission scheme is offering nearly £1,000 to unemployed European youths to come and work in the UK.

The incentive, called "Your First EURES Job", aims to boost youth employment by making it easier for young people to find work in other EU countries.

Jobseekers are invited to apply for up to £244 to cover the cost of attending an interview in the UK and a payment of up to £814 if they get the job.

Youth unemployment fell slightly in the UK this month

The scheme is also open for UK residents seeking work abroad.

The plan appears to be at odds with the governments position on migrant workers. David Cameron said earlier this month he would consider capping the number of workers allowed into Britain from the EU.

He said: "I believe in the single market, I believe in free movement. But you know, two weeks ago, I visited two factories in a week, and I asked the question, how many people do you employ from other EU countries, what’s the balance?

"In one, it was 60 per cent; in the other it was 50 per cent. Now, heaven’s above, we have got so many unemployed people in our country that we want to train and educate and give apprentices to and get back into work."

Youth unemployment fell slightly last week to 957,000 but the figure has been rising steadily for the last 18 months.

The Department for Work and Pensions has said that the scheme will not place jobseekers in areas that have high unemployment.

Tim Aker, from the Get Britain Out The EU campaign, said: “No wonder we’re all fed up with the EU.

“Mass unemployment caused by the eurozone is the eurozone’s problem. The EU shouldn’t undercut British workers by offering British jobs to unemployed Europeans.”

The scheme is open to any EU national aged 18-30 and will offer advice and guidance on finding a job as well as financial support to up to 5,000 young people.
