Fifty Applicants Fight For Every Graduate Job

Finding It Hard To Get A Job After Uni? Here's Why

New research has revealed that not only are more than 900,000 18-to-25 year olds out of work, but a whopping 50 applicants apply for each graduate job.

Adzuna, the site which collated the research, currently lists 22,174 graduate jobs available on the market offering an average salary of £27,683 a year.

"Youth unemployment is still the greatest issue facing the British job market today," said an Adzuna spokesman.

"There are still 957,000 16-24 year olds unemployed in Britain and 38 applicants for every entry level vacancy."

The stats come on the heels of research which had painted a more positive outlook for today's university leavers from the Higher Education Careers Service Unit, which revealed earlier this month that the employment rate for grads had stayed "relatively stable" at 61.8%, compared to 62.2% last year.

Charlie Ball, deputy research director at HECSU, said: "The figures show that even in difficult times, graduates can and do get jobs."

The What Do Graduates Do study, which questioned nearly 250,000 graduates, revealed that while work is to be found around the UK, jobs are not equally spread; in 2011, 21% of UK graduates were working in the capital, while just 3.8% were in the north-east.

Around 11% had jobs in the north-west, 7.5% in Yorkshire and the Humber, 6.1% in the east Midlands, 7.7% in the west Midlands, 7.2% in the east of England, 12.5% in the south-east and 7.5% in the south-west.

It also revealed that 4.7% were working in Wales, 7.8% in Scotland and 3% in Northern Ireland.
