New York And New Jersey Hit By Nor'easter Winter Storm (PICTURES)

New Yorkers could be forgiven for hoping for a return to some sort of normality after the drama of Hurricane Sandy and the presidential election in the past couple of weeks.

So, the latest weather 'event' - a winter storm - will be sorely testing the resolve of residents of the eastern seaboard as many are forced to leave their homes, contend with disrupted public transport and cope with power cuts across the region.

The storm - a nor'easter - is a mix of rain and wet snow blown in by gusts of up to 60mph and almost as powerful as those recorded during Sandy and struck as the region was still trying to repair damage and recover from the effects of the hurricane.

New Jersey governor Chris Christie warned in the New York Times that recovery efforts after Sandy could "move backwards" with people left in the dark just days after power had been restored.

New York mayor, Michael Bloomberg said that low-lying areas had not been flooded at high tide on Wednesday afternoon but he was concerned about areas where flood defences had not yet been repaired. Parks and beaches in the city have been closed and construction work halted.

See how the storm has affected the area in the gallery below.
