Rupert Murdoch has told the Republican Party to ignore American "nativists" and appeal to a wider section of society in order to win elections.
The media baron used Twitter on Thursday afternoon to give his "election comment". He said: "Republicans have to ignore 5 per cent nativists, embrace hispanics, welcome best Asian and European graduates."
Many commentators have put President Obama's election victory down to his popularity among minority groups including African Americans, Hispanics and Asians.
Mitt Romney won 59% of the white male and 55% of the white female vote, however he lagged behind in all other ethnic groups.
Obama won 93% and 95% of the male and female African American vote, 71% and 67% of the male and female Hispanic vote and 73% and 62% of the male and female Asian vote.
The Republican Party's demographic problem has also been accepted by many of its strategists. Steve Schmidt, the senior campaign strategist for John McCain's failed run at the White House in 2008 said it was a "catastrophe".
"This is, this will have to be, the last time that the Republican Party tries to win this way," he said.
And Erick Erickson, the editor of the popular conservative 'Red State' blog said Romney's decision to "blow off Hispanic voters" had been a mistake.
"The Romney campaign to the hispanic community was atrocious and, frankly, the fastest growing demographic in America isn’t going to vote for a party that sounds like that party hates brown people," he said.
