John Terry departed Stamford Bridge on crutches and is yet to discover the extent of his knee ligament injury after he was carried off during Chelsea's Premier League draw with Liverpool on Sunday.
Luis Suárez collided into the Blues captain in the first half after a heavy touch caused his momentum and imbalance to plough into Terry, whose leg buckled awkwardly under the weight of the Uruguayan.
The match was held up for five minutes as Chelsea's medical staff attended to the 31-year-old, who was eventually taken off on a stretcher to be replaced by Gary Cahill.
Terry will have a scan at hospital on Monday, when Chelsea are expected to announce the severity of his injury and estimate how long he may be sidelined for.
"He'll have the MRI scan and then we'll understand the full extent," said Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo after the match. "There's concern, certainly."
Terry underwent exploratory surgery on his right knee in February after he bruised the joint when he collided with a post in the FA Cup third round win against Portsmouth, and was ruled out for six weeks.
Suárez, who showed concern for his opponent after the incident, tweeted his condolences yesterday evening.
Terry scored on his return from a four-match ban for racially insulting Anton Ferdinand to give the Blues the lead, only for Suárez to level with 17 minutes remaining. Chelsea have now dropped from first to third over the past fortnight following defeat to Manchester United and two draws.
