A film version of 'Dad's Army' is apparently in the works - with Captain Mainwaring to be played by a woman.

The Independent reported that the show's co-writer Jimmy Perry revealed to members of the 'Dad's Army' official fan club that a new film version is in the early stages of development.

The studio behind the project have hinted to the writer that they want the lead role of the pompous Captain Mainwaring, played by the late Arthur Lowe in the classic sitcom, to go to a woman, the newspaper said.

This will not be the first 'Dad's Army' movie - a feature film spin-off was released in 1971.
