Peter Herbert To Hold Talks With Police Over Tottenham Fans' 'Yid' Chanting

Herbert Pipes Up Against Spurs Fans Again

The Society of Black Lawyers' chairman Peter Herbert has confirmed his organisation will hold talks with the Metropolitan Police about Tottenham supporters' 'Yid' chanting.

Herbert has threatened to make a complaint to the police over the chants, which he claims are anti-semitic.

Spurs fans have chanted 'Yids' for over three decades in reference to the club's north London roots and Jewish following but Herbert, who has been subject to much criticism from supporters, journalists and even ex-players, is persisting with his crusade.

"We have been in touch with the Metropolitan Police and we will meet them as the next step," Herbert told PA Sport.

"Ideally, as a result of that they will speak to Tottenham and the Football Association about these anti-Semitic chants.

"We are prepared to make an official complaint if we feel action is not being taken."

Tottenham have already defended their fans, saying they have "taken ownership" of the phrase while the police have assured followers of the club they will not be charged if they air any Yid chants.

Herbert instead insisted they are "casual racists" and is insistent that their argument is not acceptable.

He added: "It does not make a difference if it is Tottenham fans doing the chants or away fans. There has to be zero tolerance and if that catches out Spurs then so be it."

Asked whether Jewish fans themselves sing the chant, he said: "That's not acceptable either."

Herbert also accused the Football Association and Chelsea of instigating a "cover-up" last week over the Mark Clattenburg row and claimed the FA was "institutionally racist". FA chairman David Bernstein labelled his quotes "ill-informed and unhelpful".
