Manchester City bowed out of the Champions League at the group stage for the second consecutive year after they failed to beat Real Madrid.
Angel di María crossed for Karim Benzema to open the scoring after 10 minutes when he was left unattended by the dithering Maicon, but Madrid failed to build on their lead despite several openings with Sami Khedira most culpable.
City were offered a route back into the match when Alvaro Arbeloa was harshly adjudged to have fouled Sergio Agüero to concede a penalty and earn his second yellow card. Agüero dispatched the spotkick with 17 minutes remaining but City could not breach José Mourinho's men for a second time.
