Goodluck Caubergs 'Bled To Death' After Nurse Grace Adeleye Performed Home Circumcision

Four-Week-Old Boy 'Bled To Death' After Botched Home Circumcision

A baby boy “bled to death” after a nurse performed a botched home circumcision.

Four-week-old Goodluck Caubergs died after Grace Adeleye performed the procedure in April 2010, Manchester Crown Court heard on Monday.

The 66-year-old nurse, currently standing trial for manslaughter, carried out the operation using scissors and olive oil in 2010.

She did not use anaesthetic or local pain relief, the court was told.

Adeleye, originally from Nigeria, is accused of leaving an open wound from which the child bled to death. She denies the charge.

The child’s parents, also from Nigeria, paid the medic £100 to perform the procedure unaware that it was free on the National Health Service. The jury heard that the practice is common for Christian families in Nigeria.

"The allegation essentially here is that the care she provided in the course of that procedure was so bad that not only did it cause the death of that young baby wholly unnecessarily, but it amounted to gross negligence and a crime," said Adrian Darbishire QC.

The jury heard that Adeleye arrived at the family home, performed the operation with a pair of scissors she pulled from her bag, then placed a bandage on the wound, leaving 30 minutes later having not checked the child.

The baby was later found to be dripping in blood. He died the day after having the procedure.

The trial continues.
