A sudden boom in UFO sightings in America have raised fears of the 2012 apocalypse.

Or perhaps it's the other way around.

News website Space.com said that the number of sightings has increased in the weeks leading up to the theorised armageddon imagined by some - and denied by most - to maybe take place on 21 December.

In both San Francisco and Brooklyn sightings this week have been blamed on fear of the end times.

A video recorded of a mysterious 'parade of lights' in the Prospect Heights neighbourhood of Brooklyn was said to have inspired fear of the end of days.

(It was Chinese lanterns - take a look.)

But believers remained unabashed, and another sighting of similar lights on the West Cost on 9 December initially caused excitement until it too was explained via more prosaic reasoning.

"Absolutely, tequila was maybe an influence here," Enrique Barrios, who filmed the San Francisco sighting, told CBS San Francisco.

Meanwhile Nasa has sought to downplay concerns about the end of the world, saying that life "will probably not" end on 21 December.

In a Google+ Hangout held last month, David Morrison, an astrobiologist at Nasa Ames Research Centre, said there was no reason to worry.

"There is no true issue here," he said. "This is just a manufactured fantasy."

"While this is a joke to some people and a mystery to others, there is a core of people who are truly concerned," he said.

"I think it's evil for people to propagate rumours on the Internet to frighten children."
