Christopher Samba Says Zenit Fans Are 'Racist'

'No Good And Racist'

Christopher Samba has branded Zenit St. Petersburg fans "no good and racist" after a supporters club called for the club not to buy any black or gay players.

The Landscrona fan club said in an open letter on Monday they "see the absence of black players at Zenit as an important tradition" and that black players are "forced down their throat.

"I'm not surprised. Everybody knows Zenit supporters are no good and racist," Samba told BBC Radio 5 live.

"They are living in another century. It's a sad day for Russian football."

"In this time we have different communities and countries that constitute teams. If they can't accept that then they are never going to progress."

Samba, who signed for Anzhi Makhachkala from Blackburn in February, bore the brunt of a racial insult at Lokomotiv Moscow in March when he had a banana thrown at him.

Samba told the Anzhi website at the time: "I'm very upset that such misconduct took place in view of children who were sitting on those very stands."

Russian Premier League champions Zenit have an inherent problem with racism and the latest controversy comes after one supporter waved a banana at Anzi left-back Roberto Carlos earlier this year.

Despite the signing of Alex Witsel, of French Caribbean heritage, Zenit are the only major Russian team to have never signed a player of African heritage.

Former manager Dick Advocaat said in 2008: "I would be happy to sign anyone, but the fans don't like black players."

Samba however vowed not to boycott matches due to the problems with racism in Russia but called the situation "really sad".

His Anzi teammate, Samuel Eto'o, once walked off the pitch in 2006 while playing for Barcelona against Real Zaragoza due to the sheer volume of racial abuse he received.

The Cameroonian was however persuaded to continue playing.
