Sony Xperia Z Can Be Used In The Bath (VIDEO)

WATCH: Sony's New Phone Is 'Bath Proof'

Sony has unveiled a new flagship mobile phone which can be used in the bath.

The Xperia Z is a five-inch Android device, which has been treated to be virtually impermeable to water.

The Japanese electronics giant demonstrated the phone being fully submerged in water without suffering damage.

The phone can sit in a depth of one metre of water for up to 30 minutes.

According to the BBC the feature is common in Japan, but has not made it to many top-end smartphones in Europe or North America.

Among its other features are an HD screen, and the ability to record High Dynamic Range video. It also has a 4G LTE connectivity.

Sony has struggled in recent years to gain a significant foothold in the smartphone market, and posted a full-year loss of more than $5.7bn in May 2012.
