The new system is powered by a hugely improved "Supercharged PC architecture" with a X86-based graphics processor and CPU, with 8GB of RAM.
Game demos shown running on the system, including a new Killzone title and Drive Club, a next-gen driving game, showed off a level of detail and graphical quality never before possible on a gaming console.
The new 'Dual Shock 4' PlayStation controller includes a touch pad, a 'light bar' to track a player's position in a room and redesigned - although familiar - dual-sticks and buttons.
The PS4 will allow gamers to use the company's existing PlayStation Vita handheld to live stream games from the system when the TV is being used for another function.
Sony said PS3 games will not be supported, but explained it was exploring ways to stream older games on the PS4 - and on any other device it decides.
This will be called the 'PlayStation Cloud', and will require a massive investment in network infrastructure. Sony said it will be rolling these services out in phases but insisted it will "change the way we play", hinting at a future where consoles are simply junction boxes for games played in large part on a server.

Some of the new games announced alongside previously shown titles such as Watch Dogs and Diablo III included:
KIllzone: Shadow Fall - a hugely impressive first-person perspective shooter set in a futuristic world at war
DriveClub: an amazingly detailed and realistic driving game focused around collaborative play
Second Son: what would really happen if a small group of people gained super powers?

The new console will also have an all-new user experience (above). Among the features of the new system UI include:
Background downloading of games, including with the console powered down
Digital titles are playable as they are downloaded, rather than waiting for the whole title to finish downloading
Sharing video of gameplay is simple, with a 'Share' button placed on the controller
Browse live video of your friends playing games - and take over their controller when they reach a difficult portion
Alongside the new hardware, Sony said it was creating the "fastest, most powerful gaming network in the world".
This new gaming network underpins the PS4 user interface, and integrates the streaming games technology of Gaikai, allowing players to try games instantly from the PlayStation Store.

Personally, I'm not bothered.
The fact that it isn't backward compatible PS3 will, I think, put a lot of people off, especially those with large game collections. it certainly made my mind up, It's only the dedicated Sony fan boys that will be lining up on release day.
It was pretty much the same story when they removed compatibility with the PS2 from the current console, all under the excuse of "cutting production costs"
I know its a business, but good business is sense is to give your customer what they want. Come on Sony, we don't care about all the "Sharing" bull, we just want to play!
Kwazy_Wabbit: Personally, I'm not bothered. The fact that it isn't backward
Yawn. At least they updated the Dualshock, but the left analogue stick is still in the wrong place and those triggers still look like pieces of garbage (although slightly less so, being just concave enough to warrant the use of the term 'concave'). Never used the motion sensing on the PS3 beyond experimentation, and quickly got sick of it. I haven't noticed it in any recent games, I've bought. Whatever, as long as it rumbles. It still rumbles, right Sony?
Ooh, another Killzone game. That's exactly the kind of thing to make me sigh and check my watch. Hey, Sony, how about making a good FPS? Killzone 1&2 were bad enough that I had no interest in Killzone 3 and lost faith in the Playstation brand's ability to produce quality games (except those made by Naughty Dog. Obviously). Just saying that the PS3 is at it's most useful as a media player, and it doesn't even do that very well, not being able to play .mkv files and all.
But it CAN play Naughty Dog games, so there's that.
JackVykios: Yawn. At least they updated the Dualshock, but the left
There will be plenty of FPShooters for PS4. Those above are simply the launch titles that we know about. I will likely by the PS4 solely for the next instalment of Battlefield and instalments beyond that. But that's my bag. You may have a different take on things. Expect all of the current crop of shooters to begin to exploit next gen hardware, if not in their next instalment, then for the one after that.
As to the controller, it's kind of same same but different. Doesn't seem like they've taken away in any way, merely added additional functionality. What DOES concern me, is how much these controllers will go for. I can't see them being the same price as current dual shock 3 controllers (note I didn't say as cheap as DS 3, cos, damn they're expensive). I tend to wear through the left analog stick with alarming regularity, and I'm hoping they will not be bumping the price of these up too much.

I see a lot of stuff that doesn't look like in-game graphics. If you can spot the game called watchdogs I think that is showing a more honest representation of the power of the console, but then its not about visuals, its about good gameplay. Not seeing much of that either yet.
Ben_Wilson: I see a lot of stuff that doesn't look like
It won't play PS3 games, it requires "the fastest strongest network" which most people in the UK don't have (or anywhere outside of Asia really) and they want you to stream full games... good luck with that Sony... even as a fan who has been with them from the start I am really not interested in this console.
NoFX_Caz: It won't play PS3 games, it requires "the fastest strongest
The PS4 comes with a Blu Ray drive as with the PS3, (but faster). The streaming is added functionality that will (in time) allow the PS4 to play games from PS1, 2 and 3 or stream your viewpoint to friends who may wish to spectate, or even stream the game to your PS Vita.
However, the normal mode of operating will be from the local hard drive, with game files installed from a Blu Ray.
AL_GR33N: Errm, perhaps we read different press releases. The PS4 comes
It won't play PS3 games you already own on disc... emulating them via streaming or downloading doesn't help those who already have a large collection of games on physical media.

PC architecture and supercharged gaming network. In other words, you don't own the games, just the hardware. You rent the games, pay as you go. And if it is X86 PC architecture, then folks without PS4s can rent too? Every corporation is realizing it pays more in the long run to rent. Let them pay for the hardware, maybe buy an install disc with part one too, but never actually sell them the whole package. Also suck them in with cheap sub prime mortgage, then bust them and repossess so they can rent their house back too. Lease the cars. Three year contract for the smart phone. Get them working as a temp too. Bust them back to where they belong. Renters scraping by and dying owning nothing but lingering debts.

I was hoping during the conference that the PS4 would be revealed. Instead we were greeted by some awesome graphics, a revamped controller and early game play, I guess it won't be shown until E3. Still its nice to know its coming late holiday 2013. I can't wait to play Ubisoft's Watch Dogs!

When the PS3 came out most computers could already had the graphics capability and detail they showed in their demos for PS4. Also if some of the rumors are right they are going to be using a AMD CPU and any good gamer knows Intel is the best for gaming. I wonder how bad the AMD CPU is going to act up in a x86 simulated environment which most AMD CPUs do have that since Intel will not allow the real x86 on their CPUs. But either way computer gaming is the best then console since you already do what their demos showed.
Charles_the_Great: When the PS3 came out most computers could already had
You don't lag on PC games unless you have a crap computer, just like with consoles you need a computer made for playing games.
E.g. ones with a Nvidia GTX 560 or above can play every game out there without lag and some more and has a higher graphical quality than the game previews shown for the PS4.
The_Blue_Bear: You don't lag on PC games unless you have a
and when the PS3 came out. Computing Gaming could already do the graphic detail what they showed on the PS4. Sorry I will stay on PC gaming since it way better then console any day since my GPU can already do the same detail then what they showed tonight.

and PC can already do what they showed the demos on the PS4. It could have been done when the PS3 came out. Sony is still way behind in graphic detail big time. Ask any PC gamer this question and they would agree.

Going to wait until both next gens are out (xbox 720, ps4) because its anyone's game at the moment because although 360 won the last battle playstation might have learned from their mistakes If I had bought the ps3 instead of my 360 I would have been kicking myself so I will wait until I can see the reviews and make an informed decision.
adamjhr1: Going to wait until both next gens are out (xbox
Xbox 360 is way better but I believe Microsoft will show how better their new console is going to be when show it off. Sony will not know what hit them.

Don't dismiss or write-off Sony just yet. Too early to say who'll be crowned king. What we can say, this will be a wonderful time to be a gamer! So do some over-time because I'm guessing the cost of either console will be in the ball park area of $399-$599, What should have others more concern is the possibility that backwards compatible will be a thing of the past and if so, how shall this effect the other 1000 pound gorilla in the room (Gamestop, BestBuy, etc)
XFilesTheTruthIsOutThere: Don't dismiss or write-off Sony just yet. Too early to
Xbox might have been quicker off the mark but I wouldn't count that as a win, the PS3 has actually sold more units than the xbox and was released a year later with a much higher price tag so it is actually outperforming the xbox by a long way.
Between November 2005 and February 2013 - Xbox sold 76 million units
Between November 2006 and February 2013 - PS3 sold 77 million units
NoFX_Caz: Xbox might have been quicker off the mark but I
Sorry but that's not the whole thing xbox sold more overall units and more games both bought online and in store. The failure of playstation 3 is said to actually be down to the success of the ps2 because playstation believed they can release a year later at £100 more and people will get second jobs to own it but they were wrong. I do like the free online but my brothers got a ps3 and compared to my xbox the online is unplayable it takes ages to update which it does frequently, the online lags and the graphics are the same although they boast better graphics. The problem now is that xbox have taken on the whole media system scene and its possible the next console will be more of a home media system than a console. Playstation very well might have learned from their mistakes and make the next console a real success only time will tell
adamjhr1: Sorry but that's not the whole thing xbox sold more
