A crash in a US Nascar race injured 28 spectators after a flaming multi-car smash up sent debris including a tyre hurtling through a safety fence and into the crowd on Saturday.

Fourteen people were taken to hospital while the rest were treated at the scene. None of the injuries are thought to be life threatening.

A defensive move from race leader, Regan Smith, sent Kyle Larson's car spinning in flames. The front of Smith's vehicle was completely torn off.

Joie Chitwood, Daytona International Speedway President, said: "Our thoughts and prayer are with our race fans."

The incident happened in the last lap of the second tier Nationwide Series, the day before the famous Daytona 500 race on the same track.

Officials said the race would still go ahead on Sunday.
