Artist Joe Black Marks 60th Anniversary Of Stalin's Death Using Chess Pieces

Artist Uses Odd Method To Mark Stalin Anniversary

60 years ago today the world bid farewell to Soviet Union leader Joseph Stalin, who died of a stroke aged 74.

The anniversary has been marked by Joe Black, who uses thousands of small items like ball bearings, badges or Lego Bricks to make large scale images.

And what better item to denote the face of Russian Communism than the chess piece?

40-year-old Black calls himself an ‘image-maker’ rather than an artist, but in doing so probably underplays the precision and skill that goes into his Pop Art-inspired portraits.

His Stalin image, ‘Dangerous Games’, is part of a new exhibition opening at the Opera Gallery in London this week.
