Volvo's 'Cyclist Detection' Camera Will Brake Automatically For Bikers (VIDEO)

WATCH: This New Car Will Brake Automatically For Cyclists

Volvo has unveiled a new safety system where its cars will automatically brake for cyclists.

The 'Cyclist Detection' system was unveiled and demonstrated at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show this week.

The system searches the road for cyclists swerving out in front of the car, and if it thinks the situation is dangerous it will automatically apply the brakes.

It uses a grille-mounted radar and a high-definition camera with the rear-view mirror to detect whether pedestrians or bikers are in the way.

"As the leader in automotive safety, we have been first in the industry with all detection and auto brake technologies, from the first-generation brake support in 2006 to pedestrian detection with full auto brake in 2010," said Volvo SV of Marketing Doug Speck.

Volvo cited data which says 50% of all cyclists killed in Europe were struck by a car.

The new system, which is an update of an earlier pedestrian scanner, will be available in May in the Volvo V40, S60, V60, XC60, V70, XC70 and S80.
