Jawbone Up UK Release: Can A Fitness Band Save Your Life?

The Jawbone Up fitness band has finally been released in the UK - and with its wealth of movement trackers and sensors, there's a chance it could help you lead a genuinely healthier life.

The neat little device costs just £99, and tracks a variety of interesting data about your daily movements and exercise.

In combination with an app, available for the iPhone and as of today Android too, the water resistant band tracks your sleep, your activity and your food and drink intake.

Jawbone said that it took more than 13 billion steps and 46 weeks of real world testing to tune the device for its release.

Among the data you'll pick up with the band and the app are:

  • Hours slept
  • Light and deep sleep, plus waking moments
  • Distance travelled
  • Calories burned
  • Activity intensity and time
  • Calorie intake

In a recent review, Engadget said "the Up excels at encouraging good habits and a healthy lifestyle" while noting the lower price and more varied data logging than competitors like the Nike Fuelband.

We haven't had a chance to test the UP ourselves yet, but it's an intriguing prospect. Health and sports tech is just getting bigger, and this seems like one of the most flexible and affordable hardware-software combinations yet.

It's available now from Apple Stores and Carphone Warehouse.
