MUSIC BOX: The Saturdays Finally Get A Number One

CHART TOPPERS

It feels like it's been a long time coming, but The Saturdays have finally landed their first UK number one.

They are "thrilled" with 'What About Us', featuring Sean Paul, which also became the fastest-selling single of the year.

The five-piece girl group had previously notched up 11 top 10 singles, three top 40 albums and 3.5 million record sales, but the closest they had ever got to the top spot before was number two.

The single sold 114,000 copies - more than 40,000 copies ahead of Justin Timberlake, at number two with 'Mirrors', the Official Charts Company said.

Despite losing his number one in the singles chart, there was consolation for Timberlake as he stole the album chart top spot from David Bowie with 'The 20/20 Experience' - the fastest-selling album of the year.

Bowie's album 'The Next Day', his first new material in nearly a decade, went down a place to number two.

GIGS TO LOOK OUT FOR

Hailed as "the largest credible gay festival in London for over a decade", As One In The Park has added new acts to its Bank Holiday Sunday line-up on 26 May.

Conor Maynard will be joining the festival, alongside Rita Ora, Union J, Rylan, Katy B, Boy George & Mark Vedo, Skin (DJ set) and a rare appearance from a very special guest, Holly Johnson of Frankie Goes To Hollywood fame.

The event, held in Victoria Park, Hackney, London, will feature four large indoor arenas and five additional stages. Additional live acts are due to be announced in the run up to the event.

Held since 2010 at Fire, As One is London’s biggest multi-room gay club event. This year the event has been upgraded to a festival.

OPEN YOUR EARS

A new alternative and darker side to R&B has emerged recently, thanks to the likes of Grammy Award-winner Frank Ocean and The Weekend. Even Usher surprised last year with his Diplo collaboration on 'Climax' that ditched the David Guetta-like beats for something all together more soothing.

As usual with R&B, the freshest new sounds have so far come out of the States, but one man who is about to change that is 19-year-old Joel Compass from Brixton, London.

He's just released a video for his debut track 'Back To Me', in which you won't see one drop of Courvoisier, cigars or girls shaking their 'booties' in a club - imagery that has become so typical of the genre.

However, you will see a child brandishing a gun in a heist. The director of the video revealed: "It's is a surreal story that follows a son's journey to bring his father back to life. It's about fate - and our ability, or lack thereof, to change it."

Check out Compass, who also has an EP coming out around June time, in his haunting debut below...

WARNING: This video contains scenes that some viewers may find disturbing...

Meanwhile, also coming out of the UK and sitting neatly between R&B and Soul is Sabrina Altan, who describes herself as an "alternative-neo-soul singer".

The Turkish songwriter from an Essex town, who now lives in Brighton, will be supporting JJ Rosa (Jessie Rose) at the O2 Academy Islington on 7 April and also has her second EP release on the way.

Check out her sultry sound, similar to that of D'Angelo, Lauryn Hill & Erykah Badu, below and see her tour dates here:
