Olympic Cyclist In Road Accident

Olympic cyclist Joanna Rowsell has warned people to take care on the roads after being knocked off her bike by a car.

Rowsell, who has won three gold medals for cycling, took to Twitter to reveal she had come off her bike for the first time in nine years.

She told her 25,000 followers:

She said she had escaped with just "cuts and bruises" after the accident.

Cycling safety and the attitude of motorists has come under the spotlight after a number of high profile cyclists had accidents on the road.

In November Olympic gold medallist and Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins was involved in a collision with a van while doing some light training on his bicycle not far from his home. Wiggins spent the night in hospital with a bruised hand and ribs after the accident.

British cycling head coach Shane Sutton was hospitalised and had to be put into a medically induced coma after a collision with a Peugot 206 left him with a broken jaw, broken ribs and bleeding of the brain less than 24 hours later.

South African mountain biker Burry Stander died in a road accident while on a training ride in January.

The 25-year-old, who finished fifth at the London Olympics, was killed in a collision with a taxi in Shelley Beach, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) confirmed.

Stander was a two-time Olympian, having also competed in Beijing in 2008.
