Margaret Thatcher Brixton 'Death Party' Condemned As 'Disgraceful' By Labour MPs

Leading Labour politicians have condemned a street party held in Brixton, South London, last night to celebrate the death of Margaret Thatcher.

Chuka Umunna, the MP for the South London seat of Streatham which includes parts of Brixton, told Brixton Blog: "Holding a party to celebrate the death of any person is totally wrong and in extreme bad taste – to do so in respect of Baroness Thatcher on the day of her death is utterly disgraceful.

“The people organising this dreadful event do not speak for or represent the people of Brixton, the overwhelming majority of whom will have nothing but sympathy for a family that has just lost a loved one.”

Hundreds of people gathered in city centres to hold street parties "celebrating" the death of Thatcher on Monday night.

In Glasgow revellers popped champagne while chanting "so long the witch is dead" while in Brixton one critic reorganised the letters on Ritzy Cinema's hoarding to say "Margaret Thatcher's dead lol."

The parties were also condemned by former Labour culture secretary Tessa Jowell. The MP for the South London Dulwich and West Norwood seat, said: "Democracy must always embrace legitimate dissent but the action in Brixton and elsewhere is disrespectful and completely out of order."

Police said they deployed officers to deal with around hundred people in Brixton causing "low level disorder including throwing missiles at officers." Two women were arrested on suspicion of burglary after a shop front was smashed.

In Bristol six police officers were injured after a scuffle broke out at a party celebrating Thatcher's death.
