Margaret Thatcher Dead: Queen To Attend Funeral Next Wednesday At St Paul's Cathedral

Queen To Attend Thatcher's Funeral Next Wednesday

The funeral of former Prime Minister Baroness Thatcher will be held at St Paul's Cathedral next Wednesday and the Queen will attend, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

The monarch's decision to attend the ceremony is a break with procedure, as although dignitaries from around the world are expected to attend, protocol states that royals do not attend the funerals of politicians.

This was one reason why Queen Victoria did not go to the funeral of Benjamin Disraeli despite the two being friends.

Queen Elizabeth II last broke with tradition to attend Churchill's state funeral in 1965.

David Cameron posted on Twitter: "Lady Thatcher's funeral service will take place on Wednesday, 17th April at St Paul's Cathedral."

A Downing Street spokesman added that the details had been agreed at a "co-ordination meeting" with the Thatcher family and Buckingham Palace this morning.
