The Royal Challengers Bangalore batsman destroyed the Pune Warriors bowling attack in an Indian Premier League match. His century featured seven dot balls, four singles, eight fours and 11 sixes at the Chinnaswamy Stadium and came from just 30 balls.
West Indian Gayle brought up his century with a six which crashed off the ground's roof.
He finished his innings not out, having smashed 17 sixes and 13 fours as Bangalore finished 263 for five, the highest innings total in a Twenty20 match.
Gayle said his pre-match meal was pancakes and chocolate, evoking memories of fellow Jamaican Usain Bolt's admission he ate chicken nuggets before winning gold at the Olympics.
Australian Andrew Symonds previously held the record for the fastest ton when he took 34 balls to reach three-figures in a Twenty20 game.
