A UKIP candidate who was jailed for dumping pig carcasses in a wood has won a local council seat in East Sussex.

Laurence Keeley, who was standing for UKIP in the Hailsham and Herstmonceux ward, is a former butcher who was jailed for 31 days after burning pigs’ heads, cows’ lungs and spinal cords at a beauty spot in 2003, the Brighton Argus reported.

The candidate previously told the newspaper he was not ashamed of going to prison. He could have paid a £3000 fine, but said he was so poor at the time he was eating pig swill so the month behind bars was a "bargain".

He said his time in prison taught him that most people did not deserve to be incarcerated.

The local elections saw him take 1892 votes, just ahead of the Conservative candidate Bill Bentley who managed to get 1859. The Lib Dems came third and Labour fourth.
