All the joy of a "snow day" - but in the sunshine?

That was the aim of a small Christian school, which closed its doors on Friday to allow pupils time off to enjoy the sunny weather.

Bellingham Christian school, a private school in Washington State in the US, decided that their 205 students deserved a day off to enjoy the abnormally sunny weather, the Christian Post reported.

Weather forecasters had predicted a 26°C weekend - and Principal Bob Sampson realised his pupils had not been given one snow this year, so decided to give them a "sun day".

"In a world that's got a lot of hard things going, it's fun to create a moment [of] joy," Sampson told the Associated Press.

"Kids just love the anticipation of sitting around to see if school is canceled when it snows," he said. "You know, we haven't had any snow days, so I thought, 'How fun would it be to create that anticipation for kids when it's nice out?'"

The administration checked with parents and informed the school board as well, AP reported.

The night before the school website put up a banner: "SCHOOL CANCELED DUE TO GREAT WEATHER! WAHOOO!"

"Yeah! It's a Sun Day today and everyone gets the day off from school."
