England's curse in One Day International finals continued as they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory against limited-overs specialists India.
With six wickets in hand, England needed just 20 off 16 balls as they chased 130 runs for their first ODI final victory.
However Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara's dismissals from consecutive Ishant Sharma deliveries triggered a batting collapse which left tail-ender James Treadwell needing a six off the final ball.
Reigning World Cup winners India had under-performed with the bat on a rain-hit day at Edgbaston which saw the 50-over final reduced to 20
But England struggled against off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who claimed 2-14, and slow left-armer Ravindra Jadeja, who took 2-24, in a galling defeat for captain Alastair Cook.
"It will take a couple of days," Cook admitted.
"It's a tough pill to swallow at the moment. We had high hopes of achieving something special."
