Sunderland Fan's 'Monkey Gesture' Case Adjourned

The trial of a football fan charged with making a racist monkey gesture at a Premier League match was adjourned today.

Liam Jones, 21, of East Vines, Sunderland, was charged following an alleged incident in the stands of the Stadium of Light when West Brom's Romelu Lukaku scored a goal against the north-east club.

West Brom beat Sunderland 4-2 in the game last November.

Jones was arrested after the match and charged with a racially aggravated offence.

Liam Jones at his court appearance in April

He denied the charge at a court appearance in April and was due to go on trial at Sunderland Magistrates' Court today.

The trial, expected to last a day, was re-listed for September 6.

Jones was granted bail on condition that he does not contact prosecution witnesses, attend football matches or go within 500m of St James' Park stadium in Newcastle or 300m of the Stadium of Light.

Jones was reprimanded by the District Judge Marie Mallon for wearing shorts and whistling as he left court.
