Andy Murray Triumphs Over Fernando Verdasco In Five-Set Wimbledon Thriller

Comeback King

Andy Murray is into the Wimbledon semi-finals - after looking down and out for much of his match against Spain's Fernando Verdasco.

The Scot came through in five sets, 4-6, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 7-5, having trailed by two sets against an inspired opponent.

After a roller-coaster marathon match, Murray was nerveless as he eventually served out to love, and the Centre Court erupted as Verdasco went long on match point.

He faces Poland's Jerzy Janowicz in his fifth straight grand slam semi final.

Murray berated himself during the change of ends

Earlier Murray, a self-confessed James Bond fan, had been greeted with the traditional Centre Court roar as he strode onto court in front of a crowd including former 007 George Lazenby.

The first set went with serve until Murray found himself serving at 4-5, when his second serve was found wanting, and a double fault at 30-40 saw the Scot drop his first set of the Championships.

In a topsy-turvy second set, Murray broke early, and the centre court crowd settled down, expecting a revival from the British player.

But from nowhere, 3-1 somehow became 3-5, and Verdasco was serving for the set. Murray raced to 0-40, but still could not see out the game, and the stunned crowd saw their man two sets down.

The 26-year-old Scot berated himself at the changeover, and appeared to swear in frustration, apparently mouthing: "fucking wanker, what are you doing?" to himself.

But it was never going to be that straightforward for the Spaniard, and Murray swept through the third set 6-1, with Verdasco visibly tightening at times.

The fourth was a tighter affair, with a few scares for the British number one, but he held onto to a break and served out comfortably, triggering an eruption on centre as he took the set 6-4.

The decider was a nervy affair, with Verdasco refusing to lie down. But at 5-5, it was Murray who found the break, thanks largely to winning a 20-stroke rally at deuce.
