Andy Murray's Wimbledon Victory Breaks Twitter Records

Andy Murray's Wimbledon win wasn't just a record breaker in the world of sport - it was a stunning moment in social media.

Twitter UK has said that the final points taken by the first British men's Wimbledon champion in 77 years broke >almost every record it had for moments in UK sport.

The social network said that Murray's first tweet after the match was retweeted 77,000 times in an hour - among the fastest ever by a British person.

The final was mentioned 3.4 million times on Twitter in 12 hours, with 120,000 tweets a minute at 17.25 BST, when Murray took the title.

That's more than the spike seen during the Spice Girls' Olympics closing ceremony performance, which was the most talked-about moment of the games with 116,000 tweets per minute.

That said, the Spice Girls did get in on the action too:

Murray added 131,000 followers in a day, and boosted his following by 20% over the course of the championships.
