Papiss Cisse has withdrawn from Newcastle United's pre-season tour over the club's controversial Wonga sponsorship.

Under some interpretations of Sharia Law, Muslims are prevented from benefitting from borrowing money, and Newcastle's partnership with the "legal loan sharks" has infuriated supporters.

Senegalese striker Cissé's future at St James's Park could be in jeopardy now he has not travelled with teammates to Portugal.

Cissé is believed to have requested not to wear the Wonga logo on a specially tailored shirt.

Newcastle have also spoken to the Professional Footballers' Association about the matter this week.

South African cricketers Hashim Amla and Imran Tahir do not wear a Castle beer logo on their Proteas shirts due to their Muslim faith.
