A fisherman sparked a helicopter rescue mission after a giant tuna capsized his boat and dragged him underwater.

Anthony Wichman caught the beast off the Hawaiian island of Kauai but it was so heavy it tipped his 14 foot boat over as he hauled it on board.

He then became tangled in the fishing line and was dragged under, reports Sky News.

He managed to free himself and climb back aboard his half-submerged boat from where he rang his wife.

A US Coast Guard helicopter was dispatched to rescue him, reports ITV.

Remarkably he managed to keep hold of the tuna and bring it back to port.

Speaking to Hawaii News Now, Lt. Jessica Mickelson, Sector Honolulu's Public Affairs Officer, said: "Thankfully Mr Wichman was still able to use his cell phone after capsizing and entering the water. Sector Honolulu was able to work in conjunction with 911 dispatch to get a GPS position of the capsized vessel from Mr Wichman's cell phone enabling Coast Guard rescue crews to arrive on scene at the exact location of distress instead of having to conduct a search.

"At the end of the day, we couldn't have asked for a better rescue. Mr Wichman was delivered safely to shore with minimal injuries and he and his friends will have quite the indisputable fish tale to tell."
