Robert Mugabe has won Zimbabwe's election, Reuters have reported - but observers say the process was "seriously compromised".

The official results of the controversial election are not expected for a few days - but sources from the ruling Zanu-PF party are confident they have done enough, and have "buried" the opposition Movement for Democratic Change.

"We've taken this election. We've buried the MDC. We never had any doubt that we were going to win," the source, who could not be named, told Reuters.

The the Movement for Democratic Change is protesting, with a source claiming the election had been "a monumental fraud", ITV reported.

"Zimbabweans have been taken for a ride by Zanu-PF and Mugabe, we do not accept it," the source said.

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Election Support Network, which had 7,000 people monitoring the election, said up to a million people had been prevented from voting, the BBC reported.

It said most of the people turned away were in Tsvangirai's urban strongholds, with fewer voters rejected in rural areas, where Mugabe is strong.

It is illegal to publish unofficial results in Zimbabwe, and offcials have five days to declare a winner.

Mugabe, 89, had said he would step down after 33 years in power if he lost the election.

"If you lose you must surrender," he told the BBC.
