Musician Of The Week: Indie Folk Singer Cloudi Lewis Is Giving Us Goosebumps

This week's student musician is Cloudi Lewis, a student from Southampton Solent University

How long have you been playing?

I was singing before I could talk apparently and would always put on shows and make little bands through my childhood, but started taking singing seriously when I was about 13/14.

I picked up a guitar around the age of 14 just so I could accompany my voice so taught myself the basics and went from there!

What genre of music do you play?

It's very hard to assign yourself a genre, but I have been described as indie/folk (alternative), so I am happy to go with that!

Why did you start playing?

It came very naturally to me to start playing and singing and was definitely inspired by my mums love for music, she doesn't play herself but she has always surrounded herself with musicians.

What’s your most memorable musical moment?

In the last couple of years I have a few that have stood out to me, firstly been selected by Solent University to support Trevor Horns band producers, secondly supporting Rachel Sermanni in Southampton as part of her tour and recently winning a trip to Abbey Road Studios to record my song Rambling.

What’s your dream?

In regards to music my dream would be to be able to do it full time earning enough money to survive on :)

Who’s your idol and who would you most compare yourself to? (Dead or alive...)

I wouldn't say I have an idol, but at the moment i am very inspired by Ben Howard's music. I find it hard to compare myself to anyone and have had others give me a very broad range of comparisons ranging from Kate Bush to Laura Marling to Mumford and sons etc.

If you could play with anyone, who would it be?

At the moment I'd have to pick Ben Howard, as I would love to harmonise with his voice!

If you could play at any festival, which would it be?

I would love to play every festival!

Who are your fans?

I have a very broad audience! When I ran a kickstarter campaign to fund my EP I was helped out by a lot of folk fans! In regards to age I have people as young as 9 listening to my EP and as old as 60 as far as I am aware!

What’s your all time favourite song?

This is the hardest question! It changes all the time... Right now with my current mood, I'm going to pick Oats in the Water - Ben Howard!
